De voornaamste fysisch-chemische technieken zijn:
Strippen om de vluchtige stoffen uit het water te verwijderen, waar nodig gevolgd door een gepaste gasbehandeling.
Absorptie op actief kool of andere.
Filtratie op zand (bijv. continue DynaSand filter)
Sedimentatie
Precipitatie door coagulaten/flocculanten toe te voegen.
Oxidatie door beluchting, toevoeging van oxidizers of katalytische verbranding.
